What Is A Spiritual Practitioner And How Can They Help Me Trust Myself?

In order to understand what a Spiritual Practitioner is, it is important to first understand what spirituality is. Spirituality is not dogma or religion- it is a feeling or belief that there is something greater than what we see with our eyes. It is a belief in a higher power that we are all a part of. This creates a sense of interconnectedness and feelings of compassion and empathy for others.

Various practices such as meditation, visualization, affirmative prayer, and forgiveness are used to create a life of spirituality. A Spiritual Practitioner is one who knows the truth of your being: you are whole, perfect, and complete, regardless of what outer circumstances may look like. A Practitioner teaches/uses spiritual practices to support others in creating a desired shift in their life circumstances.

How Spiritual Practice Helps

Through spiritual practice you are able to deeply connect to your true, intuitive self. Have you ever made a decision when in your gut you still felt uneasy or hesitant? When we listen to our intuition and we say no when we mean no and yes when we mean yes we make choices that are in alignment with our true self and those choices bring us joy. But when we make choices out of obligation or fear those choices can bring unhappiness and suffering.

Having a regular practice of meditation for example can support you in tuning in to your inner wisdom. Learning to sit in silence and be fully present with yourself enables you to bring that sense of presence to your entire day. I worked with a client who had a very high-pressure job. They struggled to turn it off at the end of the day when coming home to family. This resulted in arguments, hurt feelings and misunderstandings.

Through developing a meditation practice, they were able to be more present not only at home but on the job. This created a sense of peace and ease around transitioning from work to home and they began to experience more joy at home.

Listening To Your Inner Voice Helps You Live The Life You Desire

When you practice listening to that inner voice you will begin to trust it and listen to it more and the suffering will diminish. This allows you to be more confident in your choices and tuned into what you truly desire. When you are tuned-in in this way, there is no more second guessing or doubting yourself. You are able to move forward and confidently trust yourself!

We all have difficult choices to make at times. When you are in touch with who you are and how you desire to be, you are able to check in with yourself as more challenging decisions arise. You are more easily able to confirm the choice you make is in alignment with the essence of who you are.

Study on Visualization

Judd Biasiotto, a sports Psychologist, conducted a study at The University of Chicago on the power of visualization. He divided students into the following three groups:

  1. Students practiced throwing free throws every day for one hour

  2. Students visualized themselves successfully throwing free throws for an hour daily

  3. Students did not practice or visualize

The students were retested after one month and the results were the following:

  1. Students improved by 24%

  2. Students improved by 23%

  3. Students had no change

This is one of a large number of studies that show the power of visualization and other spiritual practices. Imagine what visualization could do for you!
